Update of the update.  22nd May 2021.    How to Screen Record with Mouse Cursor Visible using VLC | BREE SOLUTIONS     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVlXYFuFPzk

Update 28-November-2014:

WordPress seem to have immune someone to destroy my walk-through document, replacing the instructions with a false one-liner saying "The content of this file is dangerous". Ridiculous I know. So my file has been hacked and edited without permission and had lies inserted into it. Brilliant huh? so until I can try and fix this situation, only employ the updated walk through below below

VLC can do (computer) screen recording so you tin can make your own videos of what you lot're doing on your calculator (useful for educational purposes!!!)

1) Download and install VLC media player:
http://world wide web.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

2) Notice out where it's installed. Mine installs itself here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
– you can discover out where this is by clicking Showtime, Programs, VideoLAN then right click on the VLC media player and choose Properties. In that location information technology says Target:, click in the field containing the text and copy ALL of the accost.

three) Then download a mouse cursor icon.
You can get ane from here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mouse_pointer_small.png
Save the image (don't change the png format – png has transparency information which you will demand to make use of)
Know where y'all saved the file. Re-create Information technology TO YOUR VLC Binder(or 'DIRECTORY' if yous like the old terminology).
VLC when it does screen capture doesn't show the mouse so yous need to tell information technology to use the png image for the mouse. I don't accept a clue why this situation is the mode information technology is, but that's the reality.

iv) Now open up VLC.
Click Media from the carte bar
Click Open Capture Device. A screen similar to the ane below will appear.

VLC screen mod1
in Capture mode, choose Desktop
in Options alter fps setting to 20 (or 25)
Click on Show more than options
In the edit options you might see something like this:
:screen-fps=twenty.000000 :alive-caching=300
Click in this field. Go the then of the line and then press Infinite
then paste the line below
:screen-mouse-image=
(make sure you had that space in in that location or it doesn't seem to work)
immediately after the equals sign (=) so paste the proper noun of
your file. e.one thousand. Mouse_pointer_small.png
then you will have pasted something like
:screen-mouse-image=Mouse_pointer_small.png

Note: This assumes y'all put your mouse arrow file in the VLC directory. It is where the ":screen-mouse-paradigm=Mouse_pointer_small.png" Instruction volition go to find the file. I guess that when you lot saved it, you probably saved it somewhere else, perhaps in your 'downloads' folder? Then motility (or copy) the file to the VLC folder. Mine copy of vlc.exe just happens to be installed in the C:\Plan Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\ folder, and I'd gauge your vlc.exe file is likewise installed there – or something like.
And don't forget to have that infinite. I left information technology off once and it acquired an error bulletin to announced while recording, and the mouse didn't show.!!
Then click on the down arrow abreast the Play push button. Don't click the push button itself!
And then choose Convert
Click Scan and choose where you lot desire to shop the recording and requite it a name.

When you're ready, click kickoff
VLC should now start recording. Information technology sometimes autohides and the window prior to VLC may pop up, only it sometimes seems to fail to autohide. So you may need to scramble around, bring upward the window yous wanted to work with. Do what you want to record and then at the end get dorsum to VLC and click stop.
After clicking stop, VLC volition dump the info to file and you tin review information technology.

NOTE: If yous CANNOT tin't encounter your mouse in the playback, you will probably need to drop your screen resolution. I've had bad problems with this, tearing my hair out because none of the 'How to' internet pages gave any solution to this – they but mentioned using a 'png' file for the mouse.

It doesn't seem to like recording direct off at high resolutions e.g. it didn't work at a resolution of 1366×768 OR 1280×800 or 1280×768. 1280×720 resolution seemed to work. So I entered the lower resolution, then set upwards VLC every bit mentioned above so when recording I went back to my desktop and jumped dorsum into 1366×768 mode. Playback of the recorded session revealed that I could nonetheless see the mouse after stepping up to high res. Over again I have no idea why this is happening. I'thou just sharing how I cracked this trouble.

OK so you lot'll have to get some video editing software to cut out the bit at the start where you're messing effectually with your settings rather than go down to recording what you wanted to do. Simply hey, VLC is IMHO the near powerful FREE software out there to do live screen capture. It would be nice if you sent the VLC team a small donation (fifty-fifty a few dollars).
